Strategic Planning Process:

Mission Statement:

The core idea behind having a mission statement for an Organization is convey two things:

• Why the Organization exists
• What is the core purpose of an Organization or what it does

Generally a great mission statement comprise following characteristics:

• Short
• Memorable
• Inspiring
• Market Focus - This explains who are the target custom of an Organization and why do they business with the Organization.
• What are the key things, Organization wants to be remembered for in customer's mind.

I would like to first take an example which is out side of the list given here. Its google's mission statement - 

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

This I feel really a great mission statement and which had all characters a mission statement should have. Now from similar analogy if I look into the given example I would with Barclay's mission statement which I feel follows above characters also aligned to my company Cognizant.

Helping people achieve their ambitions – in the right way.

Barclay is service company and it provides financial services to their target customer. Similarly Cognizant is also a service company and its core purpose of business is help their customer more successful.
