First and foremost- the leader must eliminate all signs of personal insecurity in dealing with his or her smart employees. Personal insecurity transmits very well through body language and decision-making!
Second: While you don't have to give them a crystal-clear roadmap chalking out their progression year on year, you do need to keep them engaged and intellectually challenged. Smart people often tend to be passionate, and work that doesn't inspire them disengages them. And that means they will start looking elsewhere.
And thirdly: Earn their respect! This means leading with Charisma , becoming a person who can be respected, by winning their trust, by remaining consistent, and by being willing to act on innovative, out of the box ideas.
